Migrate from Squarespace

Squarespace looked good from day one. Now you need something the template doesn't do.

The templates are good while your business fits inside them. I move your pages, content and Google rankings to a custom website built around your business, not around a template.

Where it starts to cost. Not on day one, but as the business grows.

  1. Template

Lovely, until you need something different

Sections, blocks and spacing come in preset variations. Anything beyond that is code pasted into a code block, which Squarespace doesn't maintain and which can break with the next change.

  2. Export

An export that doesn't export everything

Squarespace's export carries only part of the content: basic pages and one blog, in WordPress's format. Products (apart from a separate CSV), most blocks and the whole design stay inside.

  3. Cost

The plan grows with what you need

Commerce, more advanced forms and memberships call for a higher plan, and some for an extra subscription. You pay the platform for features, not for what the site does.

How the site moves when the export doesn't cover it all.

  1. Content

What the export gives, plus the published site

What the export covers, I take from the export, products from the store's CSV export, and the rest from the published site. Every page, gallery and image is listed and checked.

  2. URLs

Every old URL leads to a new one

Page, blog post and product URLs get 301 redirects, with meta titles and descriptions. Google and anyone with an old link land in the right place.

  3. Switchover

The old site runs until the new one is ready

I build the new site alongside, on a preview address. Once you approve it, only the domain's DNS records change. You cancel Squarespace once everything is checked.

Send me your website. You'll get advice and two time slots.

Enter your address and a few details. An email with advice for your platform and two open slots for a call arrives straight away, and I'll look at your site personally and get back to you.

  • Advice for your platform you can act on right now, without me
  • An idea of what a website could do in your line of business
  • Two open slots for a 30-minute call, one click to book
Are you also interested in a redesign?

I use these details only to reply to this enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

No. Squarespace exports part of the content and the products separately, and doesn't export the design or most blocks at all. That's why I migrate from the export and the published site, and check every page by hand.

They become part of the site: user accounts, sign-in and members-only content, with no extra platform subscription. Existing members move over with their access.

You can. The design moves over as it is, just without the template's limits underneath. If the move feels like the right moment for some refinement, that can happen in the same project.

Not if the migration is done properly. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect, meta titles and descriptions move with it, and after the switch I watch Search Console until the index settles. A drop in traffic after a migration is a sign nobody did that work, not a consequence of the migration.

It depends on the scope and on whether a redesign comes with it. Roughly the same as a build: a website 3–6 weeks, a web shop 6–12 weeks. The exact timeline is in the proposal, before work starts.

No. You cancel the old platform only once the new site is live and we've checked that content, redirects and, for a shop, orders are all in place. Until then the old site runs as it always has.

Because migrating a five-page website and a shop with thousands of products are not the same job. After a call and a look at your site you get a fixed proposal, and that figure holds until the end of the project.

The site comes with maintenance: updates, security monitoring, daily backups and uptime monitoring. Alongside it comes SEO + AEO, so after the move the site doesn't stand still but gets found by search engines and AI models.
